Puffin in grass

In my previous post I mention Puffins, so I thought I would enlighten people about Skomer Island in Pembrokeshire.

Skomer Island is a small island 15 mins by boat from the Pembrokeshire coast.

You can visit the island from April until September each year with the boat times running at 10:00, 11:00 and 12:00 each day with either a return at 15:00 or 16:00.

Go to Martins Haven, near Marloes, and follow the signs Lockley Lodge.

There is a 250 person limit to the island each day, so once the tickets are gone you cannot visit, however, I would also highly recommend the boat tour round the islands and the evening boat trip to see the shear waters come in. That runs on a Tuesday evening at 19:00.

Boat tickets are £11 per person and there is a £10 per person charge to land on Skomer.

You can also stay on the island if prearranged.

For more info, visit Welsh Wildlife.

Take liquid and snacks to have a picnic, but please make sure you take your rubbish home.

Pair of Puffins

There are several picnic spots which you will need to stick to as you are not allowed to go off the paths, and with good reason as you will either end up knee deep or hip deep in a puffin of shear water burrow!

Cliff

There are toilets right in the centre of the island at the farm.

If it is a warm day take a hat and sun tan cream as it is exposed and there are no trees for shade.

The circumference of the island is about 4 miles, so a decent walk, but there are other crisscross paths to add to this.

Wear asking boots as some of the ground is a little uneven.

Take a good camera and binos as there is loads to see and take!

You will see Puffins, Peregrines, Manx Shearwaters, seals, Choughs, Guillemots, Razorbills, dolphins, rabbits, and gulls.
